Growing Echinacea and How To Grow Echinacea

First start off by picking the right spot in your garden that will either receive full sun or partial shade, but make sure not to plant in full shade, they grow best in zones 3-10.

Growing from seed is rather easy....

It’s best to sow your seeds on surface of the soil in the early spring when the soil is warm during the days between 55 to 70 degrees.

Make sure to cover the seeds with about 1/8 of an inch of soil this will help in the germination.

Water your seeds keeping the soil moist until it becomes established then your flowers will need little water there after.

Using a neutral soil that has a pH rating of 6 to 8 and well draining soil will give you optimum growth and blooms.

Echinacea plants will produce beautiful blooms from June to October and will attract butterflies to your garden.

Gathering your Own Seeds

Here is a way for you to gather your own seeds for growing next year.Start by choosing a few fully mature, Fresh Echinacea flowers.

Cutting them leaving about 5 inches of stem, tie them together and place them in a paper bag and hang them upside down allowing the seeds to fall to the bottom of the bag as they dry.

This may take several days for this to happen, once the seeds have fallen, remove the dead flowers from the bag then lay the seeds out on newspaper to completely dry out, which will take over a week. Keep them in an air tight baggie in the refrigerator till next spring to plant and enjoy and reep the Benefits Of Echinacea.

Benefits Of Echinacea

Echinacea facts and Benefits Of Echinacea

Echinacea has traditionally been used to treat or prevent colds, flu, and other infections.

Echinacea is believed to stimulate the immune system to help fight infections.

Can Echinacea Cure Acne?
Less commonly, echinacea has been used for wounds and skin problems, such as acne or boils.

How Echinacea Is Used

For the best benefits of echinacea use aboveground parts of the plant and roots of echinacea are used fresh or dried to make teas, squeezed (expressed) juice, extracts, or preparations for external use.

What the Science Says

Study results are mixed on whether echinacea effectively treats colds or flu.

For example, two NCCAM-funded studies did not find a benefit from Echinacea, either as Echinacea purpurea fresh-pressed juice for treating colds in children, or as an unrefined mixture of Echinacea angustifolia root and Echinacea purpurea root and herb in adults. However, other studies have shown that echinacea may be beneficial in treating upper respiratory infections. Most studies to date indicate that echinacea does not appear to prevent colds or other infections. NCCAM is continuing to support the study of echinacea for the treatment of upper respiratory infections. NCCAM is also studying echinacea for its potential effects on the immune system. Echinacea Side Effects and Cautions

When taken by mouth, Echinacea usually does not cause side effects. However, some people experience allergic reactions, including rashes, increased asthma, and anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reaction). In clinical trials, gastrointestinal side effects were most common. People are more likely to experience allergic reactions to Echinacea if they are allergic to related plants in the daisy family, which includes ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and daisies. Also, people with asthma or atopy (a genetic tendency toward allergic reactions) may be more likely to have an allergic reaction when taking Echinacea.

Tell your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care. Top
