The Mysterious Tropical Cinnamon Tree

The cinnamon tree I must say produces my favorite spice, I probably use it more that any other.

Im my home we love to make French toast, cinnamon rolls, raisin bread, cinnamon toast I’ve even made cinnamon chicken all which need lots of cinnamon.

The Cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka, and it was originally the only place where growing cinnamon could be found.

It is actually the bark of the laurel tree, and there are a few species of trees that produce cinnamon but probably enough I havent heard of any shortages of cinnamon, yet.

The Cinnamon Zeylanicum or Ceylon Cinnamon is the original tree that produces what I believe to be the best cinnamon of all.

Unless your a grower or have quite the nose or taste buds It can be hard to tell the difference in the ground version of the spice, but when looking at the strips of curled cinnamon the truly best quality of cinnamon will be layered, while the Cassia cinnamon is one thick piece, another way I can tell the difference is the better quality will be lighter in the color in the bark and it will taste much sweeter.

The spice is grown more commonly from the C. Cassia tree that is found in stores the grocery store that you and I use every day, unfortunately, not the best quality. You would need to go to a gourmet store or they can sometime be found in health food stores.

Madagascar, Brazil, India, Sumatra, The West Indies, and Egypt it can be found being grown but still the main source and its place of origination Sri Lanka.

The beginning years anre painful because after watchig it grow for a couple of years you will need to cut it down, yeah I know, but its necessary to do this so that the new shoots that start to grow can be esily strpped for the inner bark which is used for to get that yummy cinnamon.

The tree will keep comming back but its a painful never ending process in order to get cinnamon.

The cinnimon you see in the stores that is curled up isnt made to look that way, its just what it does naturally when it dries.

GROWING CINNAMON

You will need direct sun to partial shade for these trees to grow healthy. Watering should be done sparingly never over water by soakinging for long periods of time.

Protect the tree from hard freezes and prolonged cold weather because cinnamon trees can tolerate only short periods of freezing condition but not sever cold, remember this is a tropical tree its natural elements dont get very cold.

Cultivating a cinnamomum verum or cinnamomum zeylanicum for the highest quality of cinnamon. you must repeat the procedure above requiring you to cut down the tree and wait for the new sprouts, which the technical name is tillering, to grow.

Cinnamon is one of the few spices that does not require extraction.

Unfortunately I don’t think it can be grown in the US.....
