 Desert Rose Flower

A Flowering Evergreen

This Very beautiful flower called desert rose plant is from the adenium obesum plant, a flowering evergreen it is also called the impala lily. Learn how to care for this tropical desert rose flower.

There are many adenium hybrids with many color flowers and many variations of the colors combined you can even get them as desert rose bonsai.

These succulent plants originate from parts of East Africa, Southern Africa and Arabia believe it or not, it gets confusing because of the name and where it originates but yes, its a tropical plant and a semi evergreen shrub.

The Impala Lily or the desert rose is a member of the same family as the plumeria flower and if you look closely you will see some similarities.

It has a very distinct swollen and a trunk that is mangled somewhat deformed looking that is sandy grey in color, the leaves are beautiful and are a glossy deep green.

The bright crimson to bright pink flowers will appear almost continuously which is a big plus, that are trumpet shaped. I will provide great plant pictures so you can see the detail of this unusually beautiful plant.

It can grow up to 2 to 4 feet tall and is rarely seen growing in a garden bed, and is usually growing in pots or planters, the desert rose care really is simple.

Desert Rose Plant Care

There is actually a trick to getting the trunks of the desert rose plant to become more twisted and bulbuls or enlarged.

This makes the plant more interesting and doesn’t take a way for its flowers. The secret is as your plant is growing you can pull the plant up out of the soil just a little bit so that the roots are getting exposed or if you transplant it when repotting don’t put it back down as far into the soil.

If you repeat this process you will wind up with a fascinating and beautiful Impala Lily plant that all you friends and family will be talking about and possibly jealous of

Here are some of the different species of Adenium: Adenium swazicum, Adenium somalense, Adenium arabicum, Adenium boehmianum, Adenium multiflorum, Adenium crispum, Adenium obesum.

Directly below is a photo from Top tropical’s as usual they are my favorite nursery with just about any exotic tropical plant you can think of. You can actually purchase this plant for them as well, go and check them out at www.toptropicals.com. They also have all varites and a grea picture gallery

Arent they cool... but they kind of remind me of plucked chickens...

These awesome flowering evergreens are not fast growing shrubs nor are they shade loving shrubs they actually prefer full sun with maybe a little shade.

The Desert Rose Plant attract Hummingbirds and Butterflies, which I love any plant or shrub that does this.

The Desert Rose Plant loves a well drained soil best if its a loam and sand mixture and the soil pH should be neutral and alkaline.

It is also salt tolerant and needs moderate watering and with lots of care it can become a small desert rose tree.

Flowering plant identification is so easy with the desert rose flower because of its peculiar looking trunk of this shrub and its brightly pink flowers.
