Here I will help you learn all about the Larkspur flowers and how to grow the these flowers which are also known as Delphinium Flowers to add color to your garden.

The Larkspur or delphiniums are grown as annuals in most cases.

These beautiful colored flowers that grow on long stems bearing lacy, fringed foliage are quite a site in a rich green color.

They grow in large clusters of mass blooms in beautiful colors ranging from white, pink, deep purple flowers, lavender and Azure shades of blue flowers that are in these intense masses shooting up from its beautiful green foliage.

Besides growing and beautifying your garden these flowers are great as cuttings and mixing them into tropical flower arrangements, they are great colorful fillers and last for many days in a vase.

Larkspur and delphinium flowers belong to the buttercup family which is called Ranunculaceae, which may be familiar to some of you.

These great flowers are known to have been hybridized which is why there are such a variance in the look of the flowers these produce.

They are actually a complex flower consisting of both petals and sepals which is one of the reasons why these flowers are so beautiful.

How to grow plants like the Larkspur flowers and Delphinium Flowers

Planting

Start off by finding sunny spot Larkspur and Delphinium plants like full sun to partial shade.

The best way to grow Larkspurs is best when they are started by seeds early in the spring or fall.

It’s best to sew them exactly where you want them to grow because they don’t always do well when transplanted.

Make sure you space them at least 5 to 8 inches apart so that they don’t overcrowd each other when it becomes larger.

Watering and Mulching

When Watering keep the soil moist, don’t let the soil dry out completely between watering this could cause permanent damage to your flowers.

The Larkspur flower and Delphinium plants grow best if you add compost each spring, and place a layer of mulch to retain moisture and control weeds on Larkspur beds each year.

Remember when watering not to over water these plants are susceptible to root rot.

Helpful Hints

Remove spent Larkspur flowers as needed. Trim back to the ground in late fall after foliage dies back.

Cut or break off any dead flowers, this helps to encourage new growth and a fuller healthier plant with more blooms.

You may need to Stake some of the flowers because the stalks are hollow and can’t always support the heavy flowers it produces.

Using a time released fertilizer is recommended at least every two months or so read the recommendations on the label, some are once a month to every three months until next application.
