The Exotic & Tropical Nun Orchid

Nun Orchid

The Nun Orchid ia an exotic cultivation of orchids and bamboo combined that have created these magnificent Nun Orchids...

A beautiful orchid species and a great addition to your tropical garden or you can grow it as a house plant.

These types of orchids are a magnificent species is a very wide spread terrestrial, and is most commonly found in the eastern part of Australia, and several other countries like Northern India, Thailand,Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The plant can grow to be pretty large, with stout fleshy pseudobulbs that look like bamboo, and several large pleated leaves, as you can see in the pictures of orchids below.

Inflorescence (means the flowering part of a plant) is a simple raceme which may attain 40 inches height with shapely blooms.

The common name is explained by looking into the throat of the flower. One can see what appears to be a nun with head bowed in prayer.

Here are some of the other names it is known by, Phaius tankervilliae, also known as Tankerville’s Phaius, Kunai Orchid, Swamp Orchid, Swamp Lilly, and Greater Swamp Orchid. Wow! Would someone make up their minds, that's really is a lot of names just for one flower.

I hope you will enjoy these pictures of orchids.

When grown outdoors it should be placed in a shady location No direct sunlight only filtered light.

A semi-shaded position indoors is also highly recommended when growing Phaius tankervilliae indoors or as a house plant.

They should be repotted every couple years as the roots can become quite extensive.

This Beautiful flower likes a well drained, but moist, rich in humus, acidic soil so in other words will need lots of attention in order for proper plant care orchid and its needs.

It can tolerate a drought, but isn't happy about it for too long.

Allow potted plants to dry out more in winter when their leaves die back. Water with rain water if possible, if not fill a container with water for watering and let it sit for a day or two so that the chemicals will evaporate out of the water.
