Plumeria Care

Most people have no idea that the plumeria is related to the Oleander, Nerium oleander, and both possess a poisonous, milky sap but not the plumeria.

When it comes to plumeria plant care each of the separate species of Plumeria bears differently shaped leaves, their form and growth habits are also very different and distinct.

The leaves of Plumeria alba are quite narrow and corrugated, while leaves of the P. pudica have an elongated oak shape and glossy, dark green color, this is one of the ways to tell them apart.

Plumeria pudica is one of the continual blooming types of plumeria plants with non-deciduous, evergreen leaves all are easy plumeria care plants this one is the crème de la crème of the plumeria flowers and of the most popular planting plumeria plants.

Another species that retains leaves and flowers in winter is P. obtusa, though its common name is Singapore, it is originally from Colombia but grown in most tropical areas these days.

Frangipani can also be found in Eastern Africa, where they are sometimes referred to in Swahili love poems as the giving flower of love.

The most fragrant plumeria is at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them.

The flowers have no nectar, and simply dupe their pollinators by luring them in with their amazing fragrance. The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their fruitless search for nectar.

How To Grow Plumeria

Plumeria Propagation And Plumeria Care
The Plumeria species are easily propagated by taking a cutting of leafless stem tips you are actually cutting plumeria stems in spring and allowing them to dry at the base before inserting them into soil. Plumeria Care is so easy yet you must be patient. they are also propagated via tissue culture both from cuttings of freshly elongated stems. It truly is easy.

How To Grow Plumeria The Frangipani Flower
Plumeria are very adaptable. When growing plumeria they can be put into containers, and into the ground.

During their growth season, your plumeria plant will require lots of sun, water and rich nutrient fertilizers to grow healthy.

When your plumeria gets at least six hours of full sun per day, it will delight you with lots of sweet smelling Fragrant Plumeria, beautiful blooms year after year.

Plumeria also love water, but they can't stand to have over saturated wet roots, this will slow the growing and blooming process and you don’t want to deprive yourself of the wonderful smelling blossoms it produces.

Be sure and plant your cutting in fast draining soil. Plumerias require a soil that promotes good drainage. A good mix would be 1/3 sand, 1/3 perilite, and 1/3 bark compost or peat. A bag of cactus mix will also do well, and believe it or not a mix of 50% sand and 50% soil mix will work as well.

To help insure that in addition to the advice I provided above you can place several inches of gravel, rocks or broken bricks to the bottom of the hole or in the pot where you are planting your plumeria tree.

In tropical areas, plumeria trees can grow up to 20 feet high and 20 feet in diameter… but you can control the size of your plant by the size of container you choose for it.

Plumeria Fertilizer

As mentioned before, Plumeria trees need a lot of food.

Fertilization should be applied by liquid or time release pellets or by spraying the leaves weekly with a mix of fertilizer. Which they really love.

Don't worry about adding soil mix that contains fertilizer such as Miracle-Gro or other plant soil mixes or manure. These do not have the proper drainage needed and will become soggy and are slow to filter the water.

If you love to go that extra mile for your plants and wish to mix up your own fertilizer for proper Plumeria care it is recommended that you use a high phosphorus water soluble mix such as a super bloom fertilizer. You can accurately measure the amount of fertilizer your plant gets each time you feed it if you do this.

Feeding the plumeria plant every other week will promote healthy branching and most importantly, lots of new blooms. And the secret to lots of Plumeria blooms is getting you tree to branch. lots of branching.

The goal is to get your plant to flower beautiful fragrant plumeria flowers as much as possible, a fertilizer high in phosphorous will greatly aid your plant with its flowering and branching. I

If you are a busy person, and most of us are, and you don’t have time to mix up your own batches of fertilizer or if you are afraid you will forget to feed it regularly, you can buy a time released, pellet time released fertilizer that will feed your plumeria tree on a regular basis.

For those of you who really want to accelerate the flowering ability of your Plumeria tree, supplement the water/fertilizer feedings with a foliation fertilizer spray which they love very much.

A mix of SNG, a 10-10-10 fertilizer and Coco Wet can be a super booster to your growing periods. Once spring and summer have passed and September rolls around it is time to stop the fertilizer.

What to do when your Plumeria tree goes dormant
When growing plumeria once the falls arrives, depending where you live, your Plumeria tree will begin to go dormant and lose all its leaves and all flowering will cease.

At this time of critical plumeria care you should gradually stop watering the plant until you no longer water it at all.

During this time of dormancy, if winter temperatures fall below freezing, you should bring your potted tree into the house or garage for storage until the next spring.

The Plumeria tree is almost dead during this time. During this non growing plumeria time and the temperature begins to get back into the upper 50s at night and 70s during the day, you can bring your Plumeria back outside again this should be a slow process introducing it to the sun and before you know it its flowering time again.

Plumeria Disease

Although frangipanis, the plumeria flower are fairly hardy, there are some pests and plumeria disease which can affect them.

Predominantly fungus, Scale, Frangipani rust and stem rot.

Frangipani Rust
This is a fairly new disease that has been attacking frangipanis plumeria Tree in Australia called frangipani rust.

When growing plumeria it is most noticeable in late summer and early autumn. An orange to yellow small powdery clumps appears on the underside of leaves and can go undetected if you’re not looking for them at first.

These little pods of powder will rupture and spread spores which pass the disease to other plants nearby fairly quickly.

The top of the leaves of the plumeria plants will turn brown and discolored. Infections may cause the leaves to drop prematurely and can lead to the death of smaller plants, however larger trees can survive this disease. When growing plumeria in order control frangipani rust try using a fungicide in the warmer months to slow down the growth of the disease. Make sure to pick up all fallen leaves that are diseased. Any fungicide may slow the reappearance of frangipani rust next season.
